About Google Fiber Project

As you’ve probably heard by now, Google is planning to launch their own experimental fiber-to-the-home network that will provide up to 1GB/S in a community of 50,000 to 500,000 people. This has generated huge excitement across US cities, and many are vying to become involved with the project.

Google is keeping very mum on the details at the moment, and seems to be focusing on choosing the communities with the right “fit” before they move forward.  They are doing this by requesting information from city governments, and by asking individuals to nominate their community.

Nominate Your Community -

Individuals, organizations, and individuals are being asked to “Nominate your Community” via form on Google’s website.  This isn’t very exciting, but is very important to the process.  In addition, we want to see Burlington blow up every media channel possible with the message that “We want Google in Burlington”.   Check out our blog posts to see what others are doing, and get involved yourself.

Local Government RFI -

City governments are being asked to fill out a complex “Request For Information” that Google has provided.  This wide-ranging questionnaire  covers everything from population and city area, to number of apartment buildings, to the utility poles ownership and regulatory obligations.  At this point Burlington has held a public forum seeking collaboration from citizens, and has committed to having the document completed well-ahead of the deadline.
